Training

  1. The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) The Web site of this association for workplace-learning professionals offers a bevy of training resources, including a library with statistics, publications and services, and training tools; Training & Development Magazine; and chat rooms for topics from training basics to performance improvement.
  2. ASK International When visiting this site head straight for the knowledge center, where you’ll find articles on multimedia and Internet-based training and distance learning.
  3. Big Dog’s Human Resource Development Page Don’t be frightened by the name—you’ll find lots of training tools, including the Instructional System Design (ISD) Manual, an online guide to implementing your own training program. The site also offers training statistics, a glossary of terms and acronyms, information on mentoring, performance, and continuous process improvement, etc. The site is run by Don Clark a.k.a. "Big Dog," inventory control lead at Starbucks Coffee Co.’s roasting plant.
  4. Brandon Hall Resources Inc. This Sunnyvale, CA multimedia training provider sells its publications and software first—bypass all of that and head to the sections farther down the scrollbar. Visit the FAQ area for a general overview of multimedia training, and Multimedia and Internet Training Newsletter to review past editorials from the company’s journal dedicated to technology-based training. You can also find links to other training companies.
  5. Center for Quality of Management (CQM) This Cambridge, MA organization founded by seven New England companies conducts research into innovative management practices, such as TQM, concept engineering, and interactive planning. Their Web site offers a preview of the publications, studies, educational, and consulting services the organization provides. You do have to pay to see all the above, but if you’re doing research into a new training program, you could find some valuable information sources here.
  6. Computer Education Management Association (CedMA)  If your company manufactures computer hardware or software, visit the site of this organization dedicated to training in hardware and software manufacturing. As a guest, you’ll be shown the conferences the association holds, its different task forces, and linked to training resources and companies specializing in the computer industry.
  7. Creative Training Techniques International Inc. (CTTI) CTTI is a Minneapolis-based company specializing in professional training for trainers. Even if you’re not a professional, you can still pick up a few things at this Web site. In particular, the Free Training Resources area offers Bob Pike’s [president of CTTI] "Ten Lessons I’ve Learned if I’m Going to Get Results from Training" and other articles.
  8. Distance Education Clearinghouse The University of Wisconsin-Extension maintains this site dedicated to the subject of distance learning, not just the school’s programs. The Articles, Bibliographies and other Resources section provides links to dozens of articles, bibliographies, online magazines, electronic mailing lists and discussion groups, and other distance-learning resources. For those new to the subject, an extensive General Information links section will get you educated.
  9. eLearning Resources A nice web site with some excellent links to other web sites specializing in e-learning.
  10. The International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) Check out the publications section of the Web site for this association for improving productivity and performance. It features a performance-improvement buyer’s guide, the society’s own magazine, Performance Improvement Journal, and a listing with synopses of society publications.
  11. The Learning Exchange If you started out knowing nothing about training and this was the only Web address you had, you would still come away with a solid foundation of training knowledge. It has all the basics: answers to frequently asked training questions, plus information about training organizations, books, periodicals, Web sites, news groups, discussion lists, and other resources.
  12. National Center for Research in Vocational Education (NCRVE) If you’re interested in the skills your workers learn before they enter the workforce, the site of this center specializing in work-related education will be a worthy stop. Based in Berkeley, CA, and maintained by the University of California, the center offers the results of its studies of vocational learning, with copies of its various newsletters and digests, reports, and abstracts from publications.
  13. TeamTrac Inc. The Web site of this Tampa, FL training provider can be an instructive visit if you go to the Article Archive section for training tips and advice. Current posted articles discuss such topics as teamwork and how to hold a productive meeting. You can also request to be notified of updates.
  14. The Training & Development Community Centre Those new to training can be stocked with general and not-so-general resources at this site maintained by TCM Internet Services, a Canadian company specializing in human resources and training and development. A glossary of terms, a listing of discussion groups, and various site links will be helpful to the casual visitor.
  15. The Training Forum This site contains databases of training associations, events, and speakers for those ready to get serious about training. If you’re still doing research, check out News & Views for more than 70 articles on topics from handling stress to teamwork.
  16. Training Magazine Go to the Web site of this publication dedicated to "the human side of business" for the most recent issue. The topics change monthly, and you have to request and pay to see older issues, but at least the information is timely. Recent articles include corporate and virtual universities.
  17. Training Media Review If you’re considering purchasing off-the-shelf training, you might stop by this site to see whether your potential purchase has scored well. CDs, Internet tools, books, and videos are reviewed by training professionals based on such criteria as holding viewer interest and value for the money. Most of the media topics are nontechnical—i.e. violence in the workplace, on-the-job training and coaching, and communication. Some software training programs are reviewed.
  18. The TrainingNet The Solutions database links visitors with the companies specializing in the training topics they’re most interested in—from AS400 to ISO 9000, TCP/IP, and more. Also provided are training software downloads, articles, and surveys.
  19. The Training Registry When you know what you want, but not where to find it, this Web site might have the answer. Search for training courses, providers, speakers, facilities, local resources, books, multimedia, associations, and consulting services. You’ll be given direct links to sites of companies that can satisfy your specific training need.
  20. The Training Supersite The motherlode of training know-how. Visit the virtual city for links to Training magazine; the Training Mall, an online store of workplace education materials; the Trade Center, online directories of training speakers, consultants, and suppliers; and perhaps most helpful, the Research Center, with archived articles, surveys, and case studies, which is fully searchable.
  21. Web-Based Training Information Center (WBTIC) Is your company a candidate for Web-based training (WBT)? A visit to this site should help you find out. The WBTIC is a nonprofit resource directed by Tim Kilby, who coined the term "Web-based training" and is training systems analyst at Hughes Training Inc., Herndon, VA. Provided are a primer to teach visitors the basics of WBT; a discussion forum; surveys; and WBT links.
