March Program - Solving the Leave Management Puzzle

Implementing and managing the Federal Medical Leave Act (FMLA), NYS Paid Family Leave (PFL) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) can be frustratingly complex. Ever-changing state and local leave laws add a level of difficulty that is challenging to even the most seasoned professional.  This session will allow attendees to gain valuable insights on managing employee absences, as well as the interplay between FMLA, NYS PFL, and ADA. The session will begin with an overview of leave laws with a presentation by Bond, Schoeneck & King attorneys Katherine Ritts Schafer, Esq and Stephanie Fedorka followed by an interactive workshop allowing you to bring your real-life scenarios to our panel of experts including Katherine Ritts Schafer, Esq, Stephanie Fedorka, Esq. and Lisa Allen, Relph Benefits Advisors.


Katherine Ritts Schafer:   Recognized as an Upstate New York Super Lawyers Rising Star, Katherine R. Schafer is a management-side labor and employment law attorney with experience representing private and public sector employers in federal and state courts, the New York State Division of Human Rights, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, The New York State Department of Labor, The Unemployment Insurance Division, the National Labor Relations Board, and in grievances and arbitrations.  Her practice includes counseling and defending management in all aspects of labor and employment matters, including discrimination and harassment complaints, civil rights litigation, employee discipline, terminations, layoffs, handbook policies, employee agreements, separation agreements, and wage and hour issues.  She regularly defends employers in claims brought under Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), the New York State Public Employees Fair Employment Act (The Taylor Law, and the New York State Human Rights Law.  Katie also advises employers on how to comply with various employment statutes, including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).  Katie represents private and public sector employers in a wide variety of industries including manufacturing, health care, higher education, public school education and the service and financial industries.  She is a frequent lecturer and conducts in-house labor and employment training for human resource personnel, supervisors, and managers.

Stephanie Fedorka– Bond, Schoeneck & King

Stephanie focuses her practice in labor and employment law matters serving clients in both the public and private sector. Stephanie has experience in assisting clients with matters arising under Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the New York Human Rights Law, among others. She also has experience in matters arising under the National Labor Relations Act and the Taylor Law. She also has experience with issues pertaining to New York and Federal wage and hour laws and regulations.

Lisa Allen brings over 25+ years of employee benefits experience, 20 with Relph Benefit Advisors, to her role as the legal and regulatory compliance subject matter expert. Lisa manages Federal and State regulatory updates. She provides client council regarding the Affordable Care Act and managing employee eligibility. She has her Certificate of Achievement in Public Plan Policy to assist our Clients offering public sector benefit plans. Lisa Allen is serving a multi-year term on an IRS Information Advisory Committee (IRSAC), where she provides constructive observations and recommendations.
