Leadership’s Role in Organizational Culture(1 credit)

Culture, defined by Merriam-Webster, consists of “the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group.” I would add, “… or organization.” Culture, even in an organization, is less about where you’re from and more about the behaviors and relationships you share with a group of people. In the organizational realm, leaders have a unique role: it is up to them to establish, purposefully adjust and maintain the culture of their organizations. And truly effective leaders understand the paradox of that role: they need to perform at their highest ability to engage employees in achieving maximum efficiency and job satisfaction, and they need to then step back and allow the employees to achieve it.

Attendees of this presentation will learn how to be leaders within their organizations. By exploring the context and purpose of organizational culture, they will be introduced to the elements of that culture – both positive and negative - and the methods utilized by leaders the world over to identify, establish and manage those elements. Attendees will acquire the tools necessary to facilitate desired behaviors while curbing the unacceptable in a productive and supportive manner. Attendees will learn how and why the employee’s relationship with leadership is at the heart of organizational culture outcomes such as engagement, retention and performance – and how best to navigate that relationship.

After the presentation we will draw names to be entered into the series raffle drawings. Prize winners will be drawn at the conclusion of the series. Follow us on Facebook to find out what prizes you could be entered to win!

About the Speaker

Bill Berthel, Emergent

After 25 years of various leadership roles in manufacturing, Bill found his calling in the work of professional coaching. Like most people, Bill started with a job which led him to a career, but that career was not fulfilling; for many years he envied those who knew and lived their purpose. Bill was fortunate that he ultimately found his purpose, and he is also aware of the very real challenges that exist in that pursuit.

HR Management was his last career before discovering his path in the area of “people potential” – development, training and coaching. He learned at that time that when people lean into discovering their highest potential-and can then find their true paths-nothing stops them! Bill is honored to guide and facilitate so many talented and passionate people in that pursuit.

Bill’s education in psychology and HR Management, combined with his practical and rich experience in manufacturing and several not-for-profit leadership roles, allow him unique opportunities to practice the skill of universally relating with others. He has witnessed this skill in others and found it to be one of the most valued attributes in a leader, and in fact his TEDx presentation, “Keep it Real,” is devoted to the ability to relate to everyone-regardless of perspectives or belief systems.

As a continuous learner, Bill enjoys several pastimes that require creativity and intellect. Playing the guitar and writing energize Bill’s language and composition skill development, while woodworking and fly-tying stretch his creativity, engineering and entomology knowledge and abilities.  Most important in his life, however, is his family. Being a husband and father are his most cherished roles and remain the areas in which he learn and grow the most so that he can be the best he can possibly be.
